Water Heaters

Gas water heaters are popular devices that use natural gas or propane to produce hot water continuously for residential or commercial use. Here is a brief overview of a standard gas water heater.

• Tank: Gas water heaters are designed as large cylindrical tanks made of steel or glass-lined steel, and can store up to 80 gallons of water. Models differ by their capacity.
• Burner Assembly:  Inside the water heater, near the bottom of the tank, there is a burner assembly. It consists of a series of gas burners or a single burner, depending on the size and design of the heater. The burner assembly is responsible for producing the heat needed to warm the water.
• Gas Supply: A gas water heater is connected to a supply line of natural gas or propane and regulated by a gas valve that controls the flow of gas to the burner assembly.
• Pilot Light or Ignition System: Gas water heaters have either a pilot light or electronic ignition system to light the gas when activated. The pilot light constantly burns and ignites the gas, while in electronic ignition models, a spark is generated upon demand for hot water.
• Combustion Chamber: The burner assembly is located inside a combustion chamber, which is a sealed compartment. This chamber ensures that the combustion process occurs safely and efficiently, separating the flame from the surrounding environment.
• Heat Exchanger: The combustion chamber is surrounded by a heat exchanger, typically a tube assembly or coil. Heat is generated by the burner assembly and then transferred to the water within the tank. The water circulates around the heat exchanger, absorbing the thermal energy and steadily increasing in temperature.
• Temperature Control: Gas water heaters have a thermostat that users can adjust to control the desired temperature of water inside the tank. The thermostat continuously monitors the water temperature and signals the gas valve to adjust gas flow to maintain the selected temperature.
• Ventilation: For secure operation, proper ventilation is necessary for gas water heaters as the process of natural gas or propane combustion emits carbon dioxide and water vapor fumes. Typically, these heaters are connected to a venting system that directs exhaust gases outside buildings, eliminating hazardous buildup.
• Safety Features:  Gas water heaters incorporate various safety features, including a pressure relief valve, which releases excess pressure if it builds up in the tank, and a flue damper, which ensures proper airflow and prevents the backflow of combustion gases.
• Water Connections: Gas water heaters come with numerous safety features such as a flue damper and a pressure relief valve. The latter prevents the buildup of excess pressure, while the former ensures optimal airflow and prevents the backflow of combustion gases.
